A family failure
First off i found the beginning very strange, no real explanation is given to Kuno not having hands, and then in his flashback he has them again. Kuno also seems to refer to Uncle Felix as his father sometimes, and his mother seems to view him as her husband. I found it odd that there is really no mention of Kuno's biological father. Uncle Felix seems to be the one who controls everything, but no one ever stands up to him, they just try to please him. Its almost as if they just try to avoid problems with him. Overall I don't really mind the book so far, as it is written well and seems interesting, but its just very confusing at times which makes it hard to really follow whats going on.

Hi Drew,
The beginning of the story, as well as the relationships within it also confuse me. Actually, most of the book so far confuses me. Hopefully as we go on it'll become more clear what is happening. look forward to seeing what other crazy things felix with have Kuno do to turn him into a tree.

I have read several of our classmate’s blogs and it seems as if we have all either mentioned the word strange, weird, or shocking in our first sentences! Having said that, I completely agree with your initial thoughts about the novel A Family Failure. I am also unsure of why the author never thought to mention the amputation of Kuno’s hands. At this point, my mind is wandering to several different ways, especially after reading the first handful of chapters! Though, I do enjoy how there was a flashback, but I wish there was more of a detailed background.
The relationship between each of the characters is unique to one another. Unfortunately, I as well am confused as to why Kuno nor his deranged mother ever stick up to Uncle Felix. Another point you touched on was where is Kuno’s biological father? And I have questioned that exact same thing. “Uncle” Felix is somewhat a surrogate father and husband to Kuno and his mother, but why? When did this shift in relationship happen? Honestly, I am hoping the father randomly appears in one of the final chapters and saves the day! Pipe-dream though, right?
I am glad you are enjoying the novel as much as I am and I cannot wait to hear your thoughts as we continue reading!
